Tropical garden

Tropical garden ideas

The jungle effect comes from leaf size and layering, not from a warm climate. Most of it is achievable a long way outside the tropics.

Getting it right

Scale is the trick: three genuinely huge leaves do more than a dozen medium ones. Layer in three tiers — a palm or banana overhead, big-leaved fatsia and tetrapanax at eye level, ferns and hostas below — and overlap them until no soil shows. Shelter matters more than warmth, because wind shreds large leaves long before frost touches them. Plan the winter protection before you plant, not in November: banana stems wrapped, tree fern crowns packed with straw.

Botanical names are given first so you can order the right plant anywhere. Heights are for mature plants in open ground.

Surfaces and materials

  • Timber decking
  • Hardwood sleepers
  • Boulders
  • Glazed pots
  • Shade sail
  • Uplighting
  • Bark mulch

Works well when

  • The space is sheltered and warm
  • Winters are mild and wet
  • You want more privacy
  • The plot is small
  • The space is overlooked

Think twice when

  • Winters bring hard, sustained frost
  • The site is open and windy
  • You want low maintenance

See it as a tropical garden

Photograph the space as it is today and compare a tropical garden against what you already have.
