Getting it right

Resist letting the whole thing be visible at once. A terrace large enough for a real table — 3.5 × 3.5 m at minimum, more than most people allow — then an open middle, then a working end screened off. Plant the boundaries deeply rather than in a thin strip: a 1.2 m border reads as a garden, a 400 mm one reads as edging. If the plot is a long rectangle, turn the layout 45° to the house so the eye stops running straight to the back fence.
