Sloping garden

Sloping garden ideas

A slope becomes an asset the moment you stop trying to flatten it. The real decision is how much to terrace and how much to plant.

Getting it right

Terracing is the expensive option — any retaining wall over about a metre needs engineering, drainage behind it and proper foundations — so terrace only where you genuinely need level ground and plant the rest. Get the steps right: a comfortable outdoor step is a 150 mm rise with a 350–400 mm tread, far shallower than indoors, with a landing every ten. Then cover the remaining slope with deep-rooting groundcover planted through jute matting until it knits together.

Plants that work

Botanical names are given first so you can order the right plant anywhere. Heights are for mature plants in open ground.

Surfaces and materials

  • Hardwood sleepers
  • Dry-stone wall
  • Gabion wall
  • Weathering steel
  • Stepping stones
  • Bark mulch
  • Boulders

Works well when

  • The ground slopes steeply
  • The soil is thin and poor
  • You want low maintenance
  • There is no vehicle access
  • The soil is sandy and free-draining

Think twice when

  • The budget is tight
  • Young children use the garden
  • You want to keep a lawn

See it as a sloping garden

Photograph the space as it is today and compare a sloping garden against what you already have.
